Part of a series inspired by the novel, “Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World”, written by Haruki Murikami, this abstract painting is composed of candy pinks, rich purples and soft browns. Transparent and opaque glazes are layered to create visual interest and depth whilst bold brush strokes lend a playful, expressive style.

The novel explores the dual narratives of the bustling, surreal world of Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the dreamlike, introspective End of the World. This tension between a reality and fantasy is mirrored in the contrast of vibrant colours with a muted palette. The ice-cream acts as a motif of the transience, pleasure, nostalgia, indulgence and fluidity experienced on entering a fantasy world.

Mixed media on cradled, wooden panel.

24.5 x 24.5 x 3.8 cms.
